Scouts Day hike kit list

Having the right kit is important when out for a day hike.  Many things need to be taken into consideration including weather, terrain and the purpose of the hike.  The day hike kit list below gives you an idea of what to take and wear.  Of course there may be things you can leave out or extra things you may need so it’s always best to check with a leader before you leave.

Even though you might only be out for the day there’s nothing to say you might run into problems.  Whilst the Leaders will have a first aid kit it is a good idea to take some first aid/survival gear.  It doesn’t have to be much, but can make a big difference if you’re caught out.

Try not to bring any unnecessary items, doing so is just extra weight.  Nobody else will carry your bag.  If you bring it-you carry it!  Of course if you’re out for a practice hike for a bigger event there may well be more things to take.  Examples could be tents, cookers and so on.  These are normally split amongst the group so someone would carry the inner tent, someone else the outer tent and a third person carries the poles and pegs.  Don’t forget who’s got what though!

Another consideration for the day hike kit list might be a mobile phone for your team or patrol, however ALWAYS check with a leader before bringing a mobile phone on a Scout activity.  There may be good reasons why it isn’t included in the day hike kit list you may be given for your event.

Day hike clothing

Warm jumper/ Fleece

Thin jumper

T shirt

Long trousers

Walking boots or strong shoes

It’s sometimes a good idea to wear two thin pairs of socks rather than 1 thick pair especially with new boots that may rub your feet.  That way one pair moves with your feet and one pair moves with the boot.
