Cubs make a splash!

5 March 2012

The Cubs had a splashing time in the mud on Sunday morning, when the Rodney Bishop 6 a side football tournament took place in the pouring rain.

This year it was our turn to host this District event, and we welcomed two teams from Petersfield, and three each from Sheet and Liphook.

Liss were in Group A with Petersfield Reds, Liphook Wheatsheaf, Sheet Adhurst and Sheet Broadlands Panthers.  Our team did really well, winning two games, drawing one, and narrowly losing the other.   We finished level on points and goal difference with Liphook, but as Liphook had scored one more goal it was they who went forward to the semi-finals, along with group winners Petersfield Reds.

In Group B, the two Liphook teams, Oakhanger and Downlands, finished first and second, with Sheet Broadlands Tigers and Petersfield Yellows completing the group.

In the semi-finals, Petersfield Reds beat Liphook Downlands 2-0.  The game between Liphook Wheatsheaf and Liphook Oakhanger finished goalless, with Wheatsheaf going through on a count of corners won.

Oakhanger won the third place play-off against Downlands.  And so to the final, and it was Petersfield Reds who managed to score the only goal, to win the Rodney Bishop trophy.  Congratulations to Petersfield, who now go forward to represent the District at the Hampshire County Cubs 6-a-side tournament later this month.

All at 1st Liss and Petersfield District extend their thanks and appreciation to Nick and Oscar from Liss Athletic FC who gallantly refereed for us, braving the elements and staying out in the middle throughout all the games.
